Water heating accounts for 27% of energy use in an average New Zealand house (BRANZ 2020), so achieving energy efficiency in water heating can make a significant difference to energy use and costs. For high-performance homes where energy-consumption is significantly reduced by improving the thermal envelope, water-heating becomes the single largest energy user and can account for well over half of the home’s usage.
Using heat pump technology to heat your water makes sense – it uses the heat from the outdoor air to heat the water in a cylinder. Heat pump water heaters are highly efficient as electricity is used to move the heat, not to create it. They generally have a high coefficient of performance (COP) e.g.: a COP of 3.0, means they create three times the energy than what is used in electricity to run the pump and fan. This performance rapidly pays off the initial investment cost. Existing home replacement hot water cylinders or home renovations: Heat pump hot water cylinders are particularly worth considering if you need to replace an external gas cylinder in light of the recent Climate Change Commission’s recommendations. For projects where Hydronic Underfloor heating is required we can supply and install heat pump systems that will heat both the concrete slab or radiators, and the potable (domestic) water. CO2 heat pumps are the latest technology from Japan for super energy efficient performance in all weather conditions. The units are so efficient they heat potable water to the pre-set temperature of 63 degrees with a single loop from the storage tank to the compressor and back. The COP (coefficient of performance) figures are market leading at a wide range of temperatures, and the systems contain no harmful refrigerants - only plain CO2.

With this system hot water is circulating through your pipes when you need it, avoiding delays and waste water as you wait for the water to get hot enough to use. The Reclaim Energy CO2 heat pump is a split system so your hot water cylinder can be either indoors or outdoors. For even more flexibility when renovating, a Reclaim heat pump can be fitted to many existing mains pressure hot water cylinders reducing your upgrade cost. They are also super quiet at just 37dB. It’s important to have enough hot water storage for efficient running so we recommend a 300L cylinder for medium to large sized homes. For large homes we can install a 600 litre cylinder, and for commercial we can install multiple systems. Single integrated cylinders are designed to be installed outside and utilise ambient heat in the atmosphere, combined with advanced heat pump technology to efficiently heat your water - even at night and in winter conditions. Quiet operation with encased compressor design, the cylinders can also be placed in some internal locations, such as garages or workshops larger than 13m3. Available in two tank capacities: 220 or 302 litres, with or without backup electrical heating element to supplement the heat pump output in colder conditions.
